Lucky's S.H.A.R.E.S.

We are participating in the Lucky's S.H.A.R.E.S. program this year. Lucky's will give 3% of qualified purchased to West Park. All you have to do is use a Lucky's S.H.A.R.E.S. card everytime you shop. If you didn't get your Lucky's card at Back to School night, you can get one in the office. You don't have to do anything to register the card. It's all been done for you. Just give it the Lucky's worker who checks you out so they can swipe your card, and West Park can get the credit. That's it! This really is an easy way to earn money for our school, so make sure you get and use your Lucky's S.H.A.R.E.S. card! (If you have any questions about the program, please contact Lisa Hiserman).

Summer Reading Celebration

We had our Summer Reading Celebration on August 26th. Our students read over 186,000 pages this summer. Way to go Eaglets!!!! I'm so amazed. The top readers in each class received a Copperfield's gift card and a "Hooray for Reading" hardback book. All of our readers received a $5.00 gift certificate to purchase a book at the Scholastic Book Fair and a frozen treat coupon. They were also entertained by the Magical Moonshine Puppet Theater. The puppet show was so great and I know all of the students had an awesome time watching it.
Congratulations to the top readers in each class:
Jessica Young, Rm.11 am; Hannah Musgrove, Rm. 11pm; Lyla Cosper & Lucia Rocha, Rm. 10; Sam Lee, Rm. 9; Jack Heitkemper, Rm. 8; Shane Sikes, Rm. 3; Otto Stahlecker Rm. 1; Chelsea Taylor, Rm. 2; Amanda Jue, Rm. 13; Rachel Chun, Rm. 14; Yoko Katahira-Ables, Rm. 6; Klarisa Montanez, Rm. 5; and Lori Sarsfield, Rm. 4.
(pictures to follow shortly)

Thank you's and other Information!

We have a few people to thank that have been working to help West Park be an even better school. First, thanks to Jeff and Pam Taylor for taking over the Reader Board this year. Second, to Cindy Kobylka for organizing the Summer Reading party and for adding up all of the reading logs. And third, to Kathy Flynn for taking over the Box Tops for Education.

We would also like to let you know that
. All of the classroom teachers and Mrs. Moore took a class this summer for the new English-Language Arts Adoption – California Treasures, Macmillan/McGraw Hill
· 6 +1 Writing Traits Class – Laura Zinser, Pam Taylor, Cindy Kobylka, Chris Schuh and Renee Palagi
· Math Training – Cindy Kobylka and Pam Taylor

Thanks to all of the teachers who did all of this training this summer. We're so glad to know that our children are in such great hands at West Park!

See The New Sidebar

I have just updated the information on the sidebar (if you don't know what that is, it's the information on the right side of the blog). I have added links for Escrip and Lucky's S.H.A.R.E.S. You can go to Escrip and register your Safeway cards and your credit cards to earn money for West Park. The Lucky's link just has information about how their program works. Right now is a great time to register or re-register your Safeway card because they are doing their "10% Goes Back to Schools" program.
The other new information on the sidebar is a list of staff members at West Park and the address and phone number for the school (including the absence reporting phone number). I hope this will be helpful to you. If there is anything else you would like added, just add a comment on the blog or email me at lmhiserman@hotmail.com.

Surf's Up
It’s time for the Jog-a-Thon to begin! We are so excited. The kick off assembly will be Friday, September 4th. Students will be getting their packets with everything they will need to start collecting pledges for the Jog-a-Thon. Every student who brings in a minimum of $25 will receive a Surf’s Up t-shirt. They are very cool this year, so make sure you get at least $25 in pledges. There are other really great prizes too! The more money you bring in the more chances you will get to win prizes!
The actual Jog-a-Thon is going to be Friday, October 16th. We are looking for volunteers for that day. If you’re interested, please contact Kristin Birdsall (you can get her contact information from the office).

Mark Your Calendars

There are lots of important events coming up at school to kick of the new year! First, the Book Fair will be running from August 25th-September 4th. It is held in the MPR pretty much everyday after school during those dates. You can get lots of great books for yourselves and your teachers. Plus, with the money that we raise from the book fair, West Park will be able to get lots of new books too!

Second, Back to School Night is August 26th. (I will let you know what time it is as soon as I find out) Parents, make sure you come out for that so you can meet your child's new teacher and find out what great events we have coming up. It's also a great time to pre-order your yearbook, buy a West Park t-shirt and sign up for committee's for the PTO. Plus, you'll get to meet and talk with our fabulous Principal, Mrs. Herdell!

Third, there is a BBQ on September 4th at noon. Come and join your child for lunch. It's lots of fun to bring a picnic lunch (or buy hamburgers at school) and eat on the lawn with your child. And, the other exciting event that day is our Jog-a-Thon Kick off! Let's raise lots of money for West Park and surpass our goal from last year!

One last thing, don't forget to bring back your reading logs from this summer (on the first day of school) so you can go to the Book Worm party on Aug 26th! Mrs. Herdell is planning a really fun party that you won't want to miss!

A Starry Night

We had our 2nd Annual Sipping & Supporting silent auction event a couple of weeks ago! It was an amazing evening. We had so many parents, teachers, and friends of West Park who came out to help lots of money for our school. We would like to thank everyone who came and also everyone who donated items to be auctioned off. We couldn't have done it without you. Finally, we would like to thank the amazing committee to put it all together. You did an awesome job and we can't wait for next year's event to see what you will come up with next. Check out the slide show on the side of the blog to see some great pictures that Mrs. Lee took of the event!

We are raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society all this month. It's called Pennies for Patients. The kids learned all about it today at the assembly, so make sure you ask your West Park Eagle about what they learned. Please bring in any spare change that you have lying around to help raise money for kids with Leukemia. Last year our school raised over a $1,000 and we would love to beat that this year. The class that brings in the most money will get a special prize!

We are doing one last big drive for Box Tops this month. Bring in as many as you can. Ask your friends, family, neighbors, anyone you can think of to save those box tops and bring them in. Please remember to trim them neatly! Thanks for bringing in so many this year. We've earned lots of money for the school and we couldn't have done it without the help of all of our West Park Families!
