Welcome Back!

It's so great to be back in school.  From what I hear from Mrs. Herdell, all of the kids have had a great first week of school and are really getting back into the swing of things.  It's going to be a great school year.

Hopefully, all parents can make it to "VIP" night next Wednesday, Aug 31st so you can meet your child's teacher and learn about JiJi math.  There will also be yearbooks and spirit wear for sale and sign ups for lots of different ways you can volunteer to make West Park even better!  The night's events are as followed:

The Book fair will be open at 5:00pm.
JiJi presentations in the MPR 5:30 and 6:15pm.
Mrs. Herdell will have important announcements in the MPR at 6:45pm.
Grades 3-5 class presentations 6:00-6:40pm
Grades K-2 presentations 7:00-7:40pm

Carnival time!!

As many of you are aware the West park carnival is the weekend! I am super excited to see what is in store for this year. My son can't wait for the cake walk and my daughter is excited for the nail painting booth. There seems to be something for everyone to enjoy! The fun will be going from 11 to 4 and I hear we still need volunteers for a 1 hour shift in the classroom booths, cakes for the cake walk and wine for the auction. All help goes to benefit our wonderful kids! I hope we have another great fundraiser, and hope to see you all there!

Meet Miss Napa County 2011

West Park is delighted to have Napa's newest celebrity, Miss Napa County 2011, Ashley Mendez attend the WPE school carnival, Saturday, May 21st.  Come on out and meet her in person, and get an autograph!  Ms. Mendez is 23 years old, and a Sonoma State University senior.  In addition to winning the crown in 2011 she received $550 in scholarship money and will compete for the title of Miss California this summer.  Her talent is singing the song "These Boots are Made for Walking", and her platform is Big Brothers Big Sisters: Advocating for Youth Through Mentoring.  Ms. Mendez's scholastic/career ambition is to obtain a PhD in clinical psychology and have her own practice as a psychologist.  Here are some other interesting facts: She has obtained three AA degrees in psychology, natural science & mathematics, social & behavioral sciences, acquired a certificate in integrative studies of women and gender, CNA, CPR is Heimlich maneuver certified, and...she doesn't know how to whistle!

Participants in this year's raffle at the West Park Elementary School carnival on Saturday, May 21st have a chance to win a brand new mountain bike and a child's size helmet as the Grand Prize!  The mountain bike and helmet were generously donated by the Safe Routes to School program.  The Magna Excitor mountain bike features 21-speeds, with front and rear suspension, and a bright yellow paint job!

West Park Loves Chinese Jump Roping

West Park students received Chinese jump ropes thanks to our magazine drive this year.  All of our students are loving playing with them.  They have learned how to use them so well and can do some really cool tricks.  Check it out the next time you're around at recess!

Classroom Projects for Raffle

All of the classrooms have been hard at work making some amazing projects to raffle off at our upcoming silent auction. All of the projects are AMAZING!!! We have pictures of almost all of them and I will add the few remaining classes next week. You will be able to purchase raffle tickets everyday after school next week and also Saturday night at the auction. The raffle tickets are only $1 a piece. What a bargain. Welcome Karla

Karla Coleman (Zachary's mom from Mrs. Schuh's class) is going to be helping with the blog. If you have any news that you would like her to add to the blog, just leave her a comment or find her at school. We are so excited that she has agreed to help!
